Tom Petty Concert
We went to a Tom Petty concert a few weeks ago. It was better than I thought it would be, even though I am a Tom Petty fan. The audience, at least in our general area, was well-behaved. I wasn't sure since one of the first comments I overheard was "Tom F**ing Petty!".
The opening act was Trey Anastasio. I hadn't really heard of him before, but a little surfing cleared that up the next day. He was the vocalist/guitarist for Phish. The songs were new to us, but they got going with some really good music. The songs remind me of some of the '60s Psychedelic Rock that I have heard along the way. The organ really came through on several of the songs.
Total performance time: about 90 minutes.
When Tom & The Heartbreakers walked on stage, the crowd went wild---lots of "Tom, Tom, Tom!" chants. Everyone got to their feet when they played I Won't Back Down. They played several songs from their latest album, Highway Companion, as well as a couple of songs from the Traveling Wilburys, and The Yardbirds. The crowd went wild for "Free Falling" and there was a lot of singing along with Refugee.
Stevie Nicks came out for three or four songs, then took a break and returned for a couple more songs and the encore. The fans really enjoyed Stevie Nicks---she still has that voice that helped make Fleetwood Mac what they were in the '70s. Stop Dragging My Heart Around was the fan favorite.
As I recall, the encore consisted of three songs with American Girl the fan favorite. Before, during, and after the encore set, there were many "Tom, Tom, Tooom!" and "Stevie, Stevie!" chants.
Tom did a good job of playing to the crowd as he walked/played his way back and forth across the stage. The fans really liked the way he looked up into the crowd. The chants increased on whichever side of the stage he was playing.
